An Athens public prosecutor on Friday pressed felony charges of bribery against Leonidas Bobolas, the chief executive officer of the Greek construction group ELLAKTOR, and two individuals linked to the company Helector SA, in which ELLAKTOR owns a 90 pct share.

The prosecution came in the wake of an investigation that began after Greek authorities turned down a request to extradite Bobolas to Cyprus, so that he might face charges of giving kickbacks to win the contract for a Paphos waste management site.

At the time, a judicial council had refused to extradite Bobolas to Cyprus on the grounds that the offence of bribery had been committed in Greece and should therefore be tried in Greece.

Bobolas had been arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by Cypriot authorities, accusing him of fraud, theft from state officials, violating laws on income and obtaining cash under false pretences and conspiracy to defraud.
