Greece has secured funds worth 1.0 billion euros available for waste management in the country Deputy Economy and Development Ministers Alexis Charitsis and Environment & Energy Socrates Famelos said during a joint press conference.

"The message is that we have to create a new situation in the field of waste management," said Famellos, pointing out that "Greece needs to turn page and to move from landfills and fines to exploitation".

In particular, according to Mr. Charitsis, from the new National Support Program 2014-2020, the resources available for European and Greek participation amount to one billion euros, and in particular, 877 million are directed to household waste management operations.

The rest will finance interventions for the management of industrial and hazardous waste and the rehabilitation of industrial facilities and contaminated land. Projects that Mr Famellos said are expected to create 16,000 new jobs.

Through the Operational Program "Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development" a budget of 273 million has already been approved for integrated interventions in waste management, green areas and bio-waste management projects.

According to Mr. Charitsis, so far in the process of evaluating the proposals, projects amounting to 140 million euros have been included and concern works across the country from Crete to Serres.

In addition, the Ministry of Economy and Development, in cooperation with the Environment and Energy ministry, will go ahead with other initiatives to "facilitate and speed up the use of available resources", as Mr Charitsis said.
