The government is planning to table legislation within the next three months to deal with strategically non-payers who deliberately withhold debt payments they are able to make, Economy and Development Minister Dimitri Papadimitriou announced in Parliament on Friday.

Replying to questions regarding the protection of homes in foreclosure auctions, meanwhile, he clarified that a tax-payer's primary residence was considered to be that given on his or her income tax forms while admitting that this was a point that needed to be examined further.

He noted that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has already ordered banks to examine the files and cases involving bad debtors owing very large sums.

Papadimitriou sternly rejected claims that primary residences were being auctioned off for debts and referred to attempts to mislead and misinform people in order to harm the government.

"The government has pledged to protect primary homes and will continue to do so. No heavily indebted household is at risk.

Those who are in danger are the debtors that took out large loans to build villas," he said. Papadimitriou was replying to Potami deputy Giorgos Amyras.
