The percentage of women holding executive positions in Greece grew to 26 pct in 2017 from 20 pct in 2016, exceeding the global average rate of 24 pct, Grant Thornton said in a survey released on Thursday.

According to the survey that the growth rate in Greece surpassed that in Germany (up 5.0 pct) and France (up 2.0 pct).

"In Greece, the percentage of women holding executive positions reached 26 pct, significantly up from 20 pct in the previous year. In Grant Thornton we aim to strengthen and take initiatives to further raise this percentage," said Vasilis Kazas, CEO in Greece.

The survey unveiled that the highest percentage rates were recorded in Italy (34 pct) in the western hemisphere and Thailand (42 pct) in the eastern hemisphere.

However, an analysis of the historical data showed that the increase recorded in the period 2004-2017 was 18 pct, significantly lower than the average 58 pct increase in Europe.

The survey said that stereotypes continued to have a strong hold in the Greeks' perceptions over the role of women.
