Joseph Stiglitz, one of the world’s most renowned economists, doesn’t deny that America has enough problems of its own to take care of at the moment.

But that didn’t stop him writing a new book about another major issue facing the global economy: the future of the euro – and of Europe itself.

“What happens in Europe affects everybody,” Mr. Stiglitz told Handelsblatt at a recent discussion in Berlin about his latest tome,

The Euro: How a Common Currency Threatens the Future of Europe, which examines the adverse effect the common currency is having on political unity on the continent. “I think it’s going to get worse.”

One point that Mr. Stiglitz elucidates in his book – and recently to an audience at the American Academy, a scholarly institution on Berlin’s Wannsee lake – is that the euro was doomed from the start.
