Greece has made progress in its effort to become a regional energy hub as it is called to serve a collective effort of production reconstruction that will take the country out the recession and the economic crisis emphasizing in society, Environment and Energy Minister Panos Skourletis on Friday said in "The Athens Conference on European Energy Law and Policy."

"This week the foundations were laid for the operation of the electricity market in the so-called target model standards. Last month we had the opportunity to proceed with important changes in various fields of energy activities and we continue to do so. Over the next period we will seek the creation of an institutional framework for the establishment and operation of energy cooperatives.

The participation of local communities, with the contribution of new technologies can and must be put into a new promotional basis, especially in relation to the energy independence of the islands," Skourletis underlined.

Skourletis said that he is also concerned over the future of fossil fuels after the Paris summit, "as we seek the golden mean of development and environmental protection, in combination with limiting our dependence on imported fuels.

Undoubtedly, the further development of renewable energy resources, changing the support framework, relates to the overall mix of the country's fuel."

The Greek minister also stressed the importance of deregulating the energy markets in line with the European Union strategy.
