The Greek unemployment rate eased to 20.2 pct of the workforce in April, from 21.7 pct in April 2017, but rose slightly from 20.1 pct in May this year, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Thursday.

 

The statistics service, in a monthly report, said that the number of unemployed people totaled 949,726 in April, down 93,632 from April 2017 (a decline of 9.0 pct) and down 7,698 or 0.8 pct compared with March 2018. The number of employed people is estimated at 3,763,377, down 1,242 from April 2017 and down 40,758 from March 2018.

The unemployment rate among women was 24.7 pct in April (from 26.1 pct in April 2017), while among men it fell to 16.5 pct from 18.2 pct over the same period, respectively.

The 15-24 age group recorded the highest unemployment rate (42.3 pct in April from 44.2 pct in April 2017), followed by the 25-34 age group (25.4 pct from 27.5 pct), the 35-44 age group (18.4 pct from 19.2 pct), the 45-54 age group (16.7 pct from 17.1 pct), the 55-64 age group (15.6 pct from 18.6 pct) and the 65-74 age group (11 pct from 11.7 pct).

Among the country's regions, Epirus-Western Macedonia recorded the highest unemployment rate (25.5 pct from 27.4 pct in April 2017), followed by Attica (21.1 pct from 21.7 pct), Peloponnese-Western Greece-Ionian Islands (20.3 pct from 21.5 pct), Macedonia-Thrace (20 pct from 22.4 pct), Aegean (19.5 pct from 18.3 pct), Thessaly-Central Greece (18.6 pct from 21.3 pct) and Crete (11.6 pct from 16.1 pct).
