Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis has signed a decision extending the electricity Interruptible Power Service Mechanism for two years until the end of 2019, the ministry announced on Friday.

It expires on December 31, 2019 at which point the measure will be re-examined.

The IPS mechanism is open to domestic industrial plants with a capacity greater than 3MW that are large consumers of power and helps them restrict their costs, in exchange for reducing consumption at times of peak demand and helping ensure the system's stability.

Interruptible service is a demand-side management tool aimed at providing flexible and rapid response to the needs of the electricity system operator in situations of imbalance between generation and demand.

This service is activated in response to a power reduction order issued by the power company to large consumers that are providers of this service, and that are mainly large-scale industry.

The interruptibility scheme is implemented in seven EU Member States (France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain).
