The introduction of digital competence in education is a top priority of the European Union's digital policy, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel was quoted as saying in relevant committees of the Greek Parliament, during a visit on Thursday.

Education and the protection of minors is an important issue that demands the joint work of EU commissioners and local governments, Gabriel said.

The EU commissioner said that only 35% of the EU's active population had digital competence or basic internet skills, despite the fact that in a few years 90% of all jobs will require such skills.

She said that a new program addressed to university students would be rolled out in 2018, and a pilot program would allow 5,000-6,000 students to acquire practical skills through digital training in other EU countries.
