Mayors, chamber representatives and other officials participating in a meeting over Cosco’s master plan to develop the port of Piraeus (OLP) by 2021 at the Regional Unit of Piraeus on Wednesday had serious reservations about elements of the plan, according to leaked information.

The main problem, according to sources familiar, was the time granted by the Chinese management to deliberate on the master plan as being insufficient, as many of the changes that are planned for the port are very serious and will affect the activities of the nearby areas over at least 25 years.

Participants also noted that OLP’s management should submit the construction, traffic and environmental reports, while others disagreed with the large scale of the commercial activities presented in the plan. The mayors participating in the meeting are expected to make their separate comments in briefings that will be held in their respective municipal councils.

The Public Port Authority, which is supervised by the shipping ministry, has called a meeting to discuss the company’s master plan, with the participation of the region’s mayors and other bodies.

However, in a letter sent to the relevant ministries of shipping and finance, OLP’s management said that the authority responsible for monitoring the concession contract is the Regulatory Authority for Ports and not the Public Port Authority.

Presenting its master plan on January 22, the company said it had taken into consideration all the requirements included in the concession agreement and the plan abides by all the laws and regulations.

The meeting was attended by the deputy regional governor of islands, Panagiotis Hatziperos, the deputy regional governor of Piraeus Giorgos Gavrilis, the mayors of Piraeus, Keratsini-Drapetsona, Perama and Salamina and other relevant bodies.
