The infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean to provide electricity to ships is expected to start on a pilot project basis at the port of Kyllini, western Greece, according to European Conference program ELEMED, held at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

The EU-funded ELEMED project aims to promote ship and port electrification, in an effort to reduce the environmental footprint of shipping and and to enhance sea routes between island regions of Greece.

In this context, the "ELEMED Program" is conducting studies on the installation of ship electrification infrastructure in three countries - Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia - and four ports, Koper of Slovenia, Killini, Piraeus and Limassol.

In statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the deputy regional governor on tourism, Spyros Galiatsatos, said that "the first ship electrification infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean starts on a pilot project basis from the port of Kyllini, which connects directly with several ports of the Ionian Islands such as Zakynthos, Poros, Sami and Piso Aetos."
