The new electronic ticket system will be fully implemented on all three lines of the Athens metro and electric railway (lines 1, 2 and 3), with the closure of the automated ticket barriers at all stations by March 15, the Athens public transport organisation OASA announced on Thursday.

According to OASA, more than 540,000 photocards have been issued so far, while 45,000 photocards have been issued to disabled persons and the unemployed. All applications made via the www.athenacard.gr website have been processed and sent off, while new applications are now processed without any delays, the transport company said.

The barriers will start to close at successive stations through the first half of March, starting with those at Syntagma Station on March 4.

On March 5-10 and on March 12-14, the barriers will only close at off-peak times, staying open between 6:00-10:00 and from 15:00-19:00.

The ticket barrier for the disabled will stay open in any case until March 15, when all barriers will close. Barriers at the Anthoupoli, Peristeri, Sepolia, Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argyroupoli, Elliniko, Agia Marina, Kerameikos, Holargos, Nomismatokopio, Agia Paraskevi, Halandri, Tavros and Marousi stations will close on March 11, with the barrier for the disabled staying open until March 15 when all barriers close. Barriers - except for the disabled - have already closed at the stations Agios Antonios, Agios Dimitrios, Egaleo, Elaionas and Doukissis Plakentias.

Here, again, all barriers will close on March 15. After March 5, eligibility for free travel will be certified via a special app on the www.idika.gr site, where the relevant fields must be filled in, after which the free fares can be "loaded" via the ticket machines. Disabled and unemployed persons eligible for discount travel that have not yet received a photocard are urged to apply online or at stations that issue photocards.
