Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) on Tuesday launched a tender for the third phase of a power interconnection project that will link the Cyclades islands to the mainland grid through submarine cable links, inviting firms to submit offers by August 23.

The project is budgeted at 115 million euros and includes laying a second submarine power cable between the port of Lavrio and the island of Syros, thus enhancing the security of the islands' connection to the grid and their independence from autonomous power stations.

The project includes carrying out the preliminary study, supply and installation of the underground and submarine cables required to construct the Lavrio-Syros II 150 kV AC submarine cable link.

Once the offers have been submitted there will be a period of technical and financial evaluation while the aim is to sign an agreement with the chosen contractor before the end of the year.

ADMIE President and CEO Manos Manousakis noted that the third phase of the Cyclades cable link is due to be completed by 2020 and has been brought forward by two years relative to the original schedule that existed when the present management took over.

"This circuit will permanently ensure that the Cyclades are supplied only by the mainland system under all operating conditions," he added.
