Greek Economy and Development ministry and Environment and Energy ministry on Thursday announced the funding of a waste management unit in Alexandroupoli, with a total state spending of 19.7 million euros.

The waste management unit includes a mechanical selection for recycling materials, bio-process and production of electricity from bio-gas with power unit of 600 KW. The unit will have an annual capacity of 44.826 tons of waste, covering the population of around 200,000 in the region.

Alexis Charitsis, deputy Economy and Development Minister said the project will decisively deal with a chronic problem of waste in the prefects of Evros and Rodopi, while deputy Environment and Energy Minister Socrates Famellos said the project paved the way to a modern comprehensive waste management era, safeguarding environmental protection, low cost and economic development in the region.
