The interconnection of the Cycladic Islands with the power network on the mainland will be completed two years ahead of schedule, Manos Manousakis, Greece's power grid operator ADMIE chairman and CEO, announced earlier this week.

Manousakis said the 24-million-euro project will be completed at the end of 2020 instead of 2022, adding that the connection will reduce utility bills for islanders in the long run by 80 million euros per year.

He said it will also reduce environmental pollution and improve safety in supply.

The first phase of the interconnection, that will link Lavrio, Syros, Paros and Mykonos, will start immediately, providing electricity to Syros by February 20 and to Mykonos in March.

Manousakis said an interconnection between the Peloponnese and Crete is also expected to be completed on 2020, while the connection with Attica is being examined in connection with the Israel-Cyprus-Crete-Attica underwater cable.
