Greek Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis presented the government measures shaping a new regulatory framework for Renewable Energy Sources.

Addressing the 1st European Forum for Energy Islands in Naxos, Stathakis referred to: the introduction of competitive procedures for renewables, the revision of a special land planning framework for renewables, the introduction of energy communities and the shaping of a regulatory framework to support to operation of an Energy Exchange in 2019 and interconnections envisaged in the European Commission's Target Model.

The Greek minister noted that islands could become sustainable systems of energy production by exploiting renewable sources and underlined the significance of Longterm National Planning to define the way, the policies and the timetable to achieve targets in transport, industry, buildings, tourism, etc.

He described the framework of "Smart Islands" and an "Energy Islands" plan and stressed that a further penetration of Renewables in the energy system was an one-way road.

"The landscape in the energy market is changing rapidly. In 2030 nothing will be as we know it. We have 12 years to move with a vision and a plan," Stathakis said.
