The launch of product distribution is scheduled for 2028, strengthening the group’s growth prospects in the European market.
The agreement provides for the filling and final packaging of iodine-based contrast agent vials, with production to be carried out at FAMAR’s facility in Homburg, Germany, which was recently added to the group’s portfolio.
The partnership is of particular importance for GE HealthCare, as it is expected to enhance its production capacity in Europe, meeting the growing demand for contrast media used in CT scans, X-rays, and interventional imaging procedures. According to the plan, the Homburg facility will be capable of supplying the company’s network with up to 25 million doses annually by 2031.
FAMAR’s Chief Executive Officer, Riku Rautsola, stated that the Homburg facilities feature large-scale, high-specification production infrastructure, emphasizing that the collaboration with GE HealthCare represents a significant step in leveraging the capabilities of the new plant and expanding the group’s services to a broader client base.
The investment is part of FAMAR’s broader growth strategy following the acquisition of the facility by MiP Pharma in September 2025. The goal is to transform the site into a multi-client Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) platform, specializing in high-value pharmaceutical dosage forms, aseptic filling, and lyophilized product packaging.
From GE HealthCare’s side, François Roche, General Manager of Pharmaceutical Diagnostics for EMEA, noted that the agreement strengthens the company’s manufacturing capacity while also enhancing the resilience of its supply chain in response to continuously rising demand.
GE HealthCare already supplies more than 100 million doses of contrast media annually worldwide, using active pharmaceutical ingredients produced at its Lindesnes facility in Norway. For FAMAR, this new agreement further strengthens its European manufacturing footprint and expands its role in providing specialized pharmaceutical development and manufacturing services.
