Government backs major private investment to upgrade Karaiskakis Stadium

  • RE+D Magazine

The proposal submitted by Olympiacos FC for the modernisation and upgrading of the “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium was discussed at the Maximos Mansion during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the participation of Olympiacos FC President Evangelos Marinakis and Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis.

The meeting focused on plans to upgrade the stadium, with the government stating that it will proceed with the necessary institutional and legislative interventions to establish the required framework for the implementation of the private investment.

The development marks the beginning of a process to transform one of Piraeus’s most important sports facilities, with the investment forming part of broader plans to upgrade infrastructure and create modern facilities.

Olympiacos FC’s Proposal

During the meeting, Olympiacos FC presented its proposal for the modernisation of the “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium. The plan involves upgrading the stadium and its infrastructure, with the aim of creating a modern sports venue capable of meeting contemporary requirements.

The implementation of such a plan requires, among other things, the resolution of institutional and planning-related issues, which also explains the government’s involvement in the process.

Following the meeting, it was announced that the government intends to initiate the necessary legislative measures to enable the investment to move forward. The intervention is expected to provide the institutional framework for the subsequent stages of the project.

Private Investment in Piraeus

Of particular significance is the government’s characterisation of the initiative as a “major private investment,” highlighting the economic dimension of the project beyond its purely sporting aspects. The stadium upgrade could constitute a large-scale infrastructure investment in Piraeus, while also contributing to the broader development potential of the area.

For the government, promoting private investment in infrastructure is a key component of its economic policy, as it is linked to the mobilisation of private capital, the upgrading of existing assets and the creation of modern facilities.

In the case of the “Karaiskakis” Stadium, the investment concerns an existing and operational sports facility with significant visitor numbers and strong public recognition, factors that add further economic significance to the project.

The Role of the Municipality of Piraeus

Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis also participated in the meeting, underscoring the importance of the investment for the city.

The upgrading of a major sports facility in the Piraeus area is directly connected to the city’s urban planning and infrastructure, while issues relating to land uses, traffic and the operation of the wider area could influence the progress of such a project.

The participation of the municipal authorities therefore also highlights the investment’s broader impact on the city.
