The Regional Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, recently conducted an on-site inspection of the works that have commenced at the General Hospital of Larissa for the construction of the new N2 wing, a hospital facility that will serve as an addition to the existing structures of the GNL “Koutlimpaneio & Triantafylleio.”

More specifically, the new N2 wing, with funding of €13.8 million, will have a total area of 7,000 m², while the total number of beds in the N2 building will be 115.

The Regional Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Regional Governor for Larissa, Maria Galliou, and the Deputy Regional Governor for Health, Evangelos Apostolou, who were welcomed and guided on a tour by the Director of the General Hospital of Larissa, Grigoris Vlachakis.

Governor Kouretas expressed his satisfaction, stating,

“We are very pleased that a new hospital is being built, which will give a major boost to public healthcare not only for the residents of Larissa but for all Thessalians.”
Speaking about the project itself, he added,
“The planned works have essentially begun in the past few days, after a delay due to the special studies required for stabilizing the excavation slopes related to the construction of the basement. Today, we can observe in person that construction has started, and we assess that the new wing will be completed on schedule.”

Mr. Vlachakis emphasized:

“We were delighted to welcome the Governor of Thessaly to the General Hospital of Larissa today. His presence marks the official commencement of the works for the new wing, a project we have awaited for years. This project will transform the hospital and fundamentally change the healthcare landscape of the region. It was originally announced by the Prime Minister in 2023 at the Alcazar stage. Finally, I would like to note that the hospital administration completed all prerequisite steps to allow the Region to proceed without obstacles with the tender and, today, with the implementation of a request expressed by all residents of Larissa.”

The new N2 wing will be constructed in the southwestern corner of the hospital site, at the intersection of Erythrou Stavrou and Swartz streets, on the location of five old warehouse and pharmacy buildings that have already been demolished. It will be connected to the existing facilities and functionally integrated with them.

Specifically, the wing will include:

  • Basement B: staff changing rooms, storage rooms, archives
  • Basement A: extension of existing outpatient clinics and endoscopy units
  • Ground floor: Dialysis unit (20 stations), expansion of Cardiology Clinic – Infarction Unit (8 beds)
  • First floor: Surgical Nursing Unit (30 beds)
  • Second floor: Orthopedic Nursing Unit (30 beds)
  • Third floor: Urology Nursing Unit (14 beds), Pediatric Surgery Nursing Unit (13 beds)
  • Fourth floor: Emergency department, stairwell exits

Most of the existing buildings of the General Hospital of Larissa currently lack adequate infrastructure quality. Therefore, the addition of the new N2 wing with 115 beds was deemed necessary to provide the required operational comfort, as well as to allow for the renovation, upgrading, and modernization of the areas that will be vacated upon completion of the new wing. After the addition and the internal relocation of beds within the clinics, the hospital will have a total of 300 beds.

With the expansion of the General Hospital of Larissa, the infrastructure of the surgical clinics and the pediatric surgery unit, the Infarction Unit, and the Dialysis Unit will be improved and upgraded. In addition, outpatient departments—which are currently dispersed across the hospital—will be consolidated, and new units, such as endoscopy units and the medical archive, will be established.
