Regarding the operator’s activities in Kuwait, the same sources added that operations continue normally, as the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the country has not been disrupted. Daily contact is maintained with employees there, the relevant authorities, and the Greek embassy. It is recalled that DESFA is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the terminal, which is one of the largest LNG storage and regasification facilities in the world.
Commenting on developments related to the vertical gas supply corridor to Eastern Europe via Greece, the sources described it as a very promising prospect for both the country and the operator. “It represents an opportunity for exports and to support the goal of substituting Russian gas, leveraging Greece’s geographical position as a gateway to Eastern Europe,” they emphasized.
They added, however, that it will take time to implement the necessary adjustments by the respective gas system operators in the countries along the route up to Ukraine, in compliance with European legislation. These adjustments will be carried out gradually, with the aim of making this route more competitive for corridor users. In any case, since the discontinuation of Russian gas supply to the EU is a shared objective of both the EU and the US, achieving this goal requires the utilization of all available supply routes in the region, as the capacity of northern pipelines (Germany, Poland) is insufficient to meet demand.
The sources also noted that, depending on developments in the Southeast European gas market, one or two additional LNG terminals may be needed in Greece, in addition to the two currently operating at Revythoussa and Alexandroupoli. They stressed that the operator will collaborate with any interested investors.
Finally, regarding the green transition, DESFA’s assessment is that it will not happen overnight, but gradually. “The energy mix will shift progressively, as electricity demand rises due to digitalization. We cannot meet this demand from a single source; gas will remain present for a long period,” they concluded.
