The action is included in the Sectoral Development Programme of the Ministry of Development for the period 2026–2030, under the priority axis “Strengthening Research and Innovation,” and aims to upgrade scientific knowledge on seismic activity in the Athens basin. The objective is to improve tools for assessing seismic hazard and enhancing earthquake resilience.
According to the decision published on the Diavgeia platform, the project builds on previous research efforts concerning microseismicity and the active tectonic structures of the region. A central component of the study is the utilization of a three-dimensional seismic velocity model, which will be used to recalculate and more accurately relocate earthquakes recorded in Attica over the past 15 years.
The research team will apply advanced data analysis methods and machine learning techniques to process large volumes of seismological data. This is expected to produce more reliable findings for the identification of active faults and a better understanding of the seismic behaviour of the wider region.
The final deliverable of the project will be an updated seismicity catalogue for Attica, which will be used in seismic hazard studies, the planning of major engineering and construction projects, and the operational planning of Civil Protection authorities.
The public expenditure of the call amounts to €120,000 and is financed through national resources of the Ministry’s development programme. The deadline for proposal submission is 31 December 2026.
