Under the agreement, the EBRD will provide Piraeus with a portfolio guarantee of up to EUR 98.5 million, backed by the European Union through the InvestEU programme and resources from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
According to the announcement, Piraeus is the only Greek bank participating in this initiative, reinforcing its role in channeling European funding toward investments that support the transformation of the Greek economy.
Financing Green and Digital Investments
The new lending portfolio will finance investments aimed at promoting innovation and the digital transformation of Greek businesses. Priority will be given to projects that strengthen companies’ technological capabilities and resilience while enhancing their competitiveness in an evolving business environment.
At the same time, the agreement will support investments related to the green transition, including projects in energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable transport, and industrial decarbonization.
The objective is to finance projects that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption while accelerating the modernization and energy upgrading of Greek businesses.
Additional EUR 1.5 Million for Advisory Services
In addition to the portfolio guarantee, the European Union will provide a further EUR 1.5 million in advisory support through the InvestEU Advisory Hub.
The funding is intended to help identify eligible, high-impact green investment opportunities, strengthening the preparation and implementation of projects with significant environmental and economic benefits.
The InvestEU guarantees and advisory services available in Greece are supported by resources from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, which the Greek government has allocated to the InvestEU programme.
Tzouros: A Major Milestone for Greece’s Economic Transformation
Theodoros Tzouros, Senior General Manager and Chief Corporate & Investment Banking at Piraeus Bank, described the partnership with the EBRD as another important milestone in the Bank’s commitment to supporting the sustainable and resilient transformation of the Greek economy.
He noted that, through innovative portfolio guarantee mechanisms, Piraeus is strengthening its ability to provide accessible and competitive financing to businesses investing in the green transition, digital transformation, and innovation.
The initiative also forms part of the Bank’s broader strategy to make effective use of European funding while reinforcing its role as a financing partner for the real economy by supporting high-impact investments that accelerate Greece’s green and digital transition.
