The project commenced in mid-January, with a planned duration of 14 months, and will be implemented in phases to minimize disruption for residents and local businesses.
“The redevelopment of the Agia Sophia axis is a substantial project for the center of Thessaloniki, progressing on schedule and reflecting a clear vision for a more functional, accessible, and human-centered public space,” stated Mr. Angeloudis following his visit to the construction site, which took place in the presence of the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility, Prodromos Nikiforidis.
Mr. Angeloudis added, “This intervention improves the street’s functionality, organizes space usage more effectively, prioritizes pedestrians, and ensures safe and comfortable movement for all. At the same time, infrastructure is being upgraded, and a new public space—a square in front of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Cathedral—is being created, in agreement with the Church, which will serve as a meeting point and a place of respite in the city center.”
The mayor emphasized that the project’s progress is monitored daily and noted, “We intervene wherever necessary to minimize inconvenience and ensure quality and a successful final outcome. We continue with planning, consistency, and respect for the public space.”
