ONEX charts path for 40 tugboats at Elefsina Shipyards

With the ceremonial keel-laying for the first vessels of the ONEX RAstar 2800 series, the ONEX Group marks the beginning of a new era for the Greek shipbuilding industry.

The investment plan concerns the construction of a total of 20 tugboats, with the possibility of expansion for an additional 20 vessels, based on designs from the Canadian firm Robert Allan Ltd., one of the most internationally recognized designers of specialized ships.

The first strategic partner in the program is MegaTugs, which is acquiring the first two RAstar 2800 tugboats while retaining an option for an additional two vessels.

The selection of Robert Allan designs positions the new production line at the forefront of international technology, with emphasis on towing power, stability, and the highest safety standards—critical factors for port operations and maritime operational efficiency.

ONEX’s business model is based on the “Builder & Provider” approach, offering ready-to-operate, high-specification vessels either for in-house use or through selected operators, such as MegaTugs. This approach ensures steady production activity and a continuous workflow at the shipyards.

At the same time, the investment is expected to create significant opportunities for the Greek economy, providing long-term employment, hundreds of new jobs, and an upgrade of domestic shipbuilding expertise.

The Chairman and CEO of the ONEX Group, and President of the Hellenic Shipyards Association, Panos Xenokostas, described the ceremony as a “milestone” for the Elefsina Shipyards, noting that three years ago the site was in a state of abandonment, whereas today it is evolving into a modern center for repairs, conversions, and new constructions.

He added that the first two tugboats for MegaTugs have already reached approximately 35% completion, with delivery targeted by the end of the year.

From the government side, Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos emphasized that the success of the project constitutes a “national challenge,” highlighting that the shipbuilding industry can serve as a key pillar of a new productive model for the Greek economy.

In the same context, Minister of Shipping Vasilis Kikilias linked the investment to maritime safety, port operations, and the strengthening of critical national infrastructure.

The presence of the Canadian Ambassador to Greece, Sonya Thissen, and the CEO of Robert Allan Ltd., Mike Fitzpatrick, highlighted the international dimension of the collaboration and the prospects for further development in innovation and green technologies.

The start of shipbuilding is considered the first substantive milestone in ONEX’s strategy to restore Greek shipbuilding capacity, with the goal of creating a sustainable and export-oriented model for specialized vessels capable of competing with leading international shipyards.
