As emphasized in the relevant announcement, the reopening of the canal became possible following significant progress and the successful completion of the main part of the critical restoration and slope stabilization works.
The decision to resume crossings was taken after a systematic evaluation of the progress of the technical interventions. According to the company’s statement, particular importance was given to the canal’s role in shipping, tourism, and the strengthening of the local economy during the summer period.
According to the same announcement, all major works directly related to the safe passage of vessels have been successfully completed. These interventions ensure the necessary conditions for the operation of the project, in full compliance with the strictest applicable standards of safety and operational readiness.
“However, today’s reopening does not mark the end of the interventions. The overall modernization and upgrading program of the Corinth Canal continues as planned, in accordance with the original operational design. The aim of the ongoing works is the long-term reinforcement and upgrading of an infrastructure of national and international significance, steadily enhancing its safety, functionality, and reliability,” the announcement states.
