A major infrastructure investment exceeding €35 million is underway in the Municipality of Acharnes, led by the Region of Attica, focusing on flood protection, road upgrades, and urban renewal.

At the center of the program is a €22.58 million flood protection project in the Old Settlement of Acharnes, fully funded by the Region. The initiative includes extensive stormwater drainage networks, interventions in the Agios Athanasios area, and the construction of a high-capacity retention basin with supporting operational infrastructure. The project comes after severe flooding in Menidi in April 2025, which caused significant damage to public and private property. According to the Hellenic Technical Chamber, the central Acharnes area remains a high-risk flood zone.

Work is also progressing on a stormwater collector and retention basin in the Old Settlement, budgeted at €6.74 million. The infrastructure features 3.6 km of pipelines, a 900-meter reinforced concrete culvert, and a 7,400-cubic-meter retention basin, with construction expected to start in the coming weeks. Additional works include 95 water collection shafts and pending pipeline sections.

The Region is also investing €4.03 million in studies and interventions to strengthen the resilience of Megala Schina, Agios Georgios, and Platanaki streams, supporting broader strategies for climate adaptation and disaster prevention.

Beyond flood control, the road network in Agia Paraskevi, Panorama, and Boskiza will be upgraded through a €2.56 million project, covering 9.3 km of road construction and improvements to enhance traffic safety and flow.

The investment package also includes the restoration of the post-Byzantine Church of Evangelistria (€90,000) and the redevelopment of Acharnes’ central square and surrounding commercial and urban core, aiming to revitalize the city’s public spaces.
