A large-scale infrastructure programme is currently underway, reshaping the country’s development landscape.

The next generation of infrastructure in the country is being shaped by a combination of strategic planning, technological innovation, and multi-level cooperation, laying the groundwork for a more resilient and competitive economy in the years ahead.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, Greece is currently experiencing a period of strong construction activity, with major projects acting as a key driver of economic growth. “We are modernising the existing network and developing new infrastructure, strengthening Greece’s position as a critical hub for international freight transport,” he notes.

A central pillar of the national strategy is the European connectivity corridors, including the Baltic–Black Sea–Aegean Corridor and the Western Balkans–Eastern Mediterranean Corridor. These axes are increasingly acquiring a multidimensional role, integrating not only the transport of goods and passengers, but also critical dimensions related to energy, security, and supply chain resilience.

Within this framework, flagship infrastructure projects are being advanced, such as the E65 motorway, the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK), and the New Kastelli Airport. These projects are expected to significantly enhance national connectivity, support regional development, and generate new investment opportunities, thereby strengthening the overall competitiveness of the Greek economy.

Securing adequate funding remains a decisive factor for implementation. For 2026, resources of €2.36 billion have been earmarked, combining national and European funding with private capital mobilised through public–private partnerships (PPPs).

At the same time, the study and design sector is emerging as a critical success factor, as the quality and maturity of technical studies directly influence both cost efficiency and delivery timelines. According to the Minister, domestic engineering expertise is also gaining increasing international recognition.

Finally, particular emphasis is placed on the digital transformation of the construction sector, with the adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) serving as a key tool for improving efficiency, transparency, and overall project management.
