Water reuse and treatment infrastructure at the core of EYDAP’s expansion plans

  • RE+D Magazine

EYDAP is entering a new phase of development, investing in modern infrastructure, circular economy initiatives, and water reuse technologies, at a time when climate change and water scarcity are making water resource management a strategic priority.

A central pillar of EYDAP’s strategy is the development of wastewater treatment and water recovery infrastructure, with a focus on the Psyttalia facilities as well as new Wastewater Treatment Plants in Eastern Attica.

The company is seeking to transform the traditional linear water management model into a closed-loop circular economy system, in which treated wastewater is reused for irrigation and other non-potable uses, thereby reducing the consumption of drinking water.

Within this framework, particular interest is attached to the pilot on-site wastewater treatment unit in Markopoulo, which processes wastewater directly from the sewer network to produce high-quality reclaimed water used for irrigating urban green spaces.

This approach effectively represents a form of “wastewater extraction” from the sewage network, aiming to enable localised production of recycled water even at neighbourhood level, significantly limiting the use of potable water for non-domestic purposes.

The initiative forms part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen the resilience of the Attica region against the pressures of climate change and prolonged drought conditions, both of which are increasingly intensifying the need for efficient water management and reuse.

Through its new investment programme, EYDAP aims to combine environmental sustainability with the technological and operational upgrading of its networks, while enhancing the long-term water security of the country’s largest urban area.
