Strong investment and construction interest was recorded in the tender for the design and construction of the new express road linking Henri Coandă (Otopeni) Airport with Bucharest’s A0 motorway, as Romania’s National Company for Road Investment (CNIR) announced that it had received 15 bids from major domestic and international construction groups.

The project, with a budget of 450 million lei (approximately €86 million), includes both the design and construction phases. The total implementation period is 30 months, of which six months are allocated to the design stage and the remaining 24 months to construction works.

Among the companies and consortiums that submitted bids are PORR, FCC Construcción, AKTOR, as well as the Romanian firms Construcții Erbașu, Concelex, Bog’Art and Frasinul, alongside Makyol and Pizzarotti.

According to CNIR, the strong interest from construction groups reflects the strategic importance of the project, which will provide a direct connection between Romania’s largest airport and the national motorway network, while also serving the future Terminal 2 of the airport.

The new road artery will be the first express road in Ilfov County and will connect to the northern section of the A0 ring motorway via a cloverleaf interchange at kilometer 29. It will also link with county road DJ 200B between the areas of Tunari and Balotești.

The project includes the construction of a 2.55-kilometre express road, approximately 7.5 kilometres of connecting branches, as well as a series of bridges and grade-separated crossings over DJ 200B and the A0 motorway.

The Romanian government estimates that the new connection will significantly improve passenger access to the airport, facilitate freight transport, reduce traffic congestion and emissions in neighbouring communities, and support future development works for the new Terminal 2 of Henri Coandă Airport.

The investment forms part of Romania’s broader transport infrastructure upgrade programme, aimed at enhancing connectivity in the capital region and improving access to key transport and logistics gateways in the country.
