According to data from the Corfu Port Authority (OLKE S.A.), the port recorded 135 cruise ship calls during the January–May 2026 period, compared with 127 calls during the corresponding period in 2025, representing an increase of 6.3%. Passenger traffic grew even more strongly, with arrivals reaching 225,018, up from 203,264 a year earlier, marking a 10.7% increase.
These results are particularly noteworthy given the heightened geopolitical challenges facing the global cruise industry. During the first five months of the year, seven scheduled cruise ship calls to Corfu were cancelled, affecting an estimated 12,757 passengers. Nevertheless, these disruptions did not hinder the destination’s continued growth trajectory.
The sustained expansion of cruise activity further reinforces Corfu’s position among the Mediterranean’s leading cruise destinations, while delivering significant benefits to the island’s economy, tourism sector, and broader business community.
Strategic Development Plan
The port’s growth strategy was also presented at Posidonia 2026, the international maritime exhibition, where the Port Authority’s management outlined its vision of transforming Corfu into a “Major Port of the Adriatic.”
Dimitris Apergis, Chief Executive Officer of OLKE, emphasized that Corfu’s strategic geographical location, combined with ongoing and planned investments, creates favorable conditions for strengthening the port’s role as a key hub for cruise operations, maritime tourism, yachting, and transport services across the wider Adriatic region.
New Infrastructure Investments
At the same time, the Port Authority is advancing its investment program, with a particular focus on upgrading port infrastructure and enhancing passenger services.
As part of this plan, two major studies with a combined budget of €414,000 are expected to be completed during 2026. These concern the development of a new Cruise Passenger Terminal and a new Extra-Schengen Passenger Terminal. Both projects are considered critical for improving the passenger experience and further enhancing the port’s competitiveness.
Economic Impact Exceeds €190 Million
The port’s contribution to regional economic development is highlighted in a recent study conducted in collaboration with Democritus University of Thrace. According to the findings, the total added value generated by the port’s operations and cruise-related activity exceeded €190 million during the 2023–2024 period.
Commenting on the results, Dimitris Apergis stated that the performance recorded during the first months of 2026 confirms the port’s significant growth prospects. He noted that the Port Authority continues to invest systematically in modern infrastructure, high-quality services, and sustainable development initiatives, with the aim of further strengthening Corfu’s position as one of the Mediterranean’s most important maritime and tourism hubs.
