One of the most significant investments in the country’s aviation infrastructure is entering the implementation phase, as the Concession Agreement for Kalamata International Airport “Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos” has been signed between the Hellenic Republic, the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (Growthfund), and the concessionaire company “Kalamata Airport S.A.”

The signing took place within the framework of the Growthfund Investor Summit 2026, marking the beginning of a new development phase for Messinia and the Peloponnese as a whole.

The agreement concerns the 40-year concession of the right to administer, manage, operate, develop, expand, maintain, and commercially exploit the airport. The initial consideration amounts to €45 million, while the total investment programme is expected to reach €125 million.

New terminal and infrastructure upgrades

The investment plan provides for the creation of a modern international-standard aviation hub, significantly increasing capacity and enhancing the passenger experience.

Key interventions include:

  • Construction of a new terminal and upgrading of existing facilities.
  • Development of new and refurbished infrastructure with a total area of approximately 11,200 sq.m.
  • Increase in check-in counters from 4 to 10.
  • Expansion of security screening and passport control areas.
  • Creation of a new aircraft parking apron.
  • Development of commercial uses, retail outlets, and food and beverage spaces.
  • Extensive investment in digital and technological infrastructure.

This represents the most significant upgrade of the airport since 1991, aiming to meet rising demand and further strengthen the region’s tourism product.

Shareholding structure

The concession company “Kalamata Airport S.A.” is initially controlled by Fraport AG with a 51% stake, Delta Airport Investments of the Kopelouzos Group with 24.5%, and PILEAS S.A. of the Konstantakopoulos Group with a further 24.5%.

Under the agreement, the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (Growthfund) will acquire a 10% stake in the company free of charge, ensuring the State’s participation in future financial returns through dividends.

Following the transfer, the shareholding structure will be as follows:

  • Fraport AG: 45.9%
  • Delta Airport Investments: 22.05%
  • PILEAS S.A.: 22.05%
  • Growthfund: 10%

A bet on rising passenger traffic

Kalamata Airport is a key gateway to southern Peloponnese and one of the most important pillars of tourism development in the region.

In 2025, it handled 368,515 passengers, marking an increase of 8.7% compared with the previous year, while 92.4% of traffic came from international flights. The upward trend continued into 2026, with traffic in the first four months recording a year-on-year increase of 12.7%.
