Greek exports reaching new highs in 2021 and destinations been shifting

Exports in 2021, including petroleum products, increased by 8.89 billion euros or 29.2%

Greek exports are having a record year reaching a new high in 2021, but the future is considered uncertain due to geopolitical developments in Europe.

As it was observed by the Panhellenic Association of Exporters and the Center for Export Research and Studies, based on the provisional data supported by ELSTAT, exports in 2021, including petroleum products, increased by 8.89 billion euros or 29.2% and amounted to 39.3 billion euros from 30.42 billion euros in 2020. 

More specifically, in 2021 it is noteworthy the jump of Turkey to 4th place, in the US. in 7th place and Romania in 8th place in the list of the most important destinations where Greek products are directed abroad.

Italy as the main destination

According to the Association's analysis, Italy continues to be the most important destination for Greek exports in 2021 (for the 11th consecutive year) while Germany remains in second place. as in 2020. 

Cyprus is in the same position as last year in the relevant ranking and then Turkey, to which the increase in exports of Greek products (by 53.9%) in 2021 has resulted in a rise from 6th to 4th place.

Followed by Bulgaria in the same position (5th) with 2020, France in 6th place from 4th in 2020, the USA and Romania in 7th and 8th place from 9th and 10th respectively.

The top ten of the main destinations of Greek exports are completed by the United Kingdom and Spain in 9th and 10th place, falling both by 2 places, despite the increase in exports to these countries.

Except for the top ten countries-customers of Greek products for 2021, it is worth mentioning the increase in the ranking of Lebanon by 79.1% (11th place from 13th) compared to the corresponding period of 2020, of South Korea by 175 , 6% (13th place from 24th), Saudi Arabia by 105.2% (19th place from 26th), Tunisia by 178% (22nd place from 37th) and Singapore by 228.2% (29th place from 46th) . 

It is noted that in the first 30 countries-customers of Greek products for 2021, there are increases in exports to all countries except only 2 countries, China by -16.7% (17th place from 11th) and Egypt by -11.8 % (24th place from 18th). 

At the level of product categories, spectacular performance is recorded by petroleum products with a very large increase in exports (+ 67.2%), aluminum products (large increases in individual categories), cotton (+ 72.6%), wheat (+142, 1%), natural gas (+ 92.5%), olive oil (+ 12.8%).
