The complex of 82 rental apartments is located in the Pendrecht neighborhood and is the first residential building constructed from solid timber in the Dutch city.
Commissioned by the local housing corporation Woonstad Rotterdam, the project was designed by Powerhouse Company as a tribute to the neighborhood’s iconic post-war housing blocks.
Specifically, the architectural studio drew inspiration from the Valckensteyn building, a 1970s structure that once stood in the area until its demolition in 2012 — a legacy that now lends its name to the new development.
The residential building consists of two linear, stepped volumes that echo the layout of the former Valckensteyn block. These are connected by a central staircase and elevator core.
