Specifically, the technology giant, through the recent signing of new projects, brings the total number of energy procurement agreements (PPAs) to eight.
These projects are integral to Amazon’s broader strategy of investing in emerging, carbon-free energy sources, reinforcing its commitment to the Climate Pledge initiative. This initiative sees Amazon pledging to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all its operations by 2040.
The initiatives supported by Amazon will provide the country with approximately 657 MW of carbon-free energy, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 330,000 Greek households. In parallel, these projects will contribute to Greece's wider objectives for transitioning away from high-carbon intensity energy sources.
"Amazon remains steadfast in its commitment to driving the transition to carbon-free energy, not only for our operations but also for the local communities where our customers live and work," stated Mr. Thanasis Patsakas, Country Manager for Greece at Amazon Web Services (AWS). "We take great pride in supporting eight agreements for wind and solar energy projects in Greece, positioning Amazon as the leading corporate purchaser of renewable energy in both Greece and Europe in 2024."
The recent agreements include the "Elzet" solar power station and the "Menelou" wind farm, both of which are owned by Greenvolt Energias Renováveis, a renewable energy project development company headquartered in Portugal. The Elzet solar power station is located in the Thessaly region, while the Menelou wind farm is situated in the Western Greece region. The Hellas Green solar station, developed by Luxcara, is located in Western Macedonia.
Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thodoros Skylakakis, remarked: "Greece, by its very nature, possesses a valuable resource for achieving its energy transition—Renewable Energy Sources. Through its decision to invest once again in our country with three new renewable energy projects—in Thessaly, Western Greece, and Western Macedonia—Amazon plays a pivotal role in achieving this national objective. Initiatives such as this, which promote the further integration of renewable energy into our national grid, bring significant benefits to local communities: they create new employment opportunities, while providing households with access to affordable electricity. On the part of the Greek government, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the continued health of this market, particularly during this crucial phase of energy transition."
Expanding Its Presence in Greece
In the previous year, Amazon announced its first large-scale wind projects in Greece, including the Vermio wind farm in Western and Central Macedonia, as well as wind farms in the Mesokorfí and Koukouros regions in the Peloponnese. These projects are anticipated to begin energy production in 2026, as reported by the development company.
The Greek government has been a strong advocate of these initiatives. Minister Skylakakis praised the collaboration between Amazon, Aer Soleir, and the National Bank of Greece, calling it "a significant commitment to the future of Greece’s renewable energy sector, substantiated by an investment with transformative potential." This support highlights how Amazon's sustainability objectives are closely aligned with Greece’s energy goals.
Supporting Local Communities
Amazon successfully achieved its goal of sourcing 100% of its energy from renewable sources in 2023, seven years ahead of the original timeline. To date, it has invested in more than 600 solar and wind projects globally, which, once fully operational, will generate renewable energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of 24.6 million households across Europe. The renewable energy projects supported by Amazon not only offset the energy consumed by its operations but also provide new, carbon-free energy sources to the communities where its customers, partners, and employees reside. Furthermore, these initiatives contribute to job creation and support local businesses, reinforcing Amazon’s broader commitment to becoming a more sustainable company.
