The contract for the first 250 electric buses in Athens and Thessaloniki was signed after the "green light" from the 6th Level of the Audit Court in the pre-contractual control.

In particular, the contract concerns the supply and maintenance for one year of 250 electric city buses, 12 meters long, with a range of 180 kilometers.

"The renewal of the public transport fleet is a priority of our Ministry, with the aim of improving the quality of the service provided to citizens. The approval by the Court of Auditors for the signing of the contract concerning the first 250 electric buses for the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki is the first step in this effort and we expect the first new electric buses at the beginning of 2024.

At the same time, the remaining parts of the tender for another 400 buses are being launched, while a second procurement phase is being prepared for an additional 650 buses. All the new vehicles will have anti-pollution technology, in order to limit the environmental footprint of the transport project" said the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in charge of Transport, Christina Alexopoulou emphasized "The strengthening of the urban transport fleet of Athens and Thessaloniki is a commitment of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, included in our government program. The acquisition of a total of 1,300 buses with anti-pollution technology, of which the first 250 electric ones have already been approved and are arriving in a few months, demonstrates from the state's point of view that the shift to electric mobility and green transport is not only done by purchasing private passenger vehicles, but is implemented horizontally in MMM.

At the same time, it is compatible with our strategic planning for E-Mobility and Road Safety, areas that are at the top of our priorities for this four-year period, firmly at the service of citizens and society."
