Business turnover up 24.3% in January

Which sectors record an increase in turnover and which decline.

The turnover of all businesses in the economy increased by 24.3% for the month of January in relation to the corresponding month of 2022, according to data announced by ELSTAT.

More specifically, for all businesses in the economy with an obligation to keep double-entry books, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in January 2023 amounted to 26,194,571 thousand euros, marking an increase of 24.3% compared to in January 2022, which had risen to 21,067,775 thousand euros.

The largest increase in turnover in January 2023 compared to January 2022 was presented by the companies of the Financial and Insurance Activities sector, by 136.6%, while the smallest increase was presented by the companies of the Public Administration and Defence, Compulsory Social Security sector, by 0.2%. Businesses in the Mines and Quarries sector showed a decrease of 4.7%

In particular, the sectors of economic activity with the greatest contribution to the total turnover of the year 2022, based on the new determination framework, are the following:

  • Wholesale and Retail Trade Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles (36.3%)
  • Manufacturing (22.0%)
  • Supply of Electricity, Natural Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning (12.4%)
  • Transport and Storage (5.0%)
  • Accommodation and Catering Services Activities (3.7%)

The sectors of economic activity with the greatest contribution to the total turnover of the year 2021, based on the new determination framework, are the following:

  • Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles (41.1%)
  • Manufacturing (21.2%)
  • Supply of Electricity, Natural Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning (7.0%)
  • Transport and Storage (5.1%)
  • Information and Communication (3.7%)
