The initiative forms part of the Ministry of National Defence’s strategic plan to rationalise the management of the Armed Forces’ real estate portfolio, with the objective of maximising added value for the Housing Programme, which constitutes a core pillar of the broader package of measures supporting military families.
Specifically, through Joint Ministerial Decisions signed by the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Thanasis Davakis, ownership of two properties within the “Karaïskakis” military camp in Attica has reverted to the Ministry of National Defence.
The two properties cover a total area of 114,363 square metres and had been granted free of charge to Local Authorities 34 and 19 years ago respectively; however, the terms of the concessions were never fulfilled. The total area of the “Karaïskakis” camp amounts to 3,352.39 stremmas.
The “Karaïskakis” camp has been incorporated into the government programme for the allocation of land for residential development. According to the current planning, 58 residential complexes, each comprising 12 apartments, will be constructed on the site, resulting in approximately 700 new housing units.
The programme also includes the development of land within the “Ziakas” military camp in the Municipality of Kordelio–Evosmos, Thessaloniki, where 600 apartments will be built, as well as the “Manousogiannakis” camp in Patras, where 150 stremmas will be converted into a residential area featuring 720 apartments.
According to the Ministry, the effective utilisation of properties that had remained unused or were not employed in accordance with the terms of their concession is considered crucial for accelerating the development of new housing infrastructure and improving housing conditions for Armed Forces personnel. The return of these properties strengthens the available portfolio of the National Defence Fund and creates additional opportunities for the implementation of projects with a social and economic footprint, at a time when the rational management of public assets is a central priority of economic policy.
A key element is the direct linkage to the Armed Forces Housing Programme, which aims to:
-
create new housing units for military personnel,
-
support families subject to relocation, and
-
reduce housing costs, particularly in high-cost areas.
