In an announcement, the Ministry highlights that the projects being launched are focused on the islands of: Fourni, Leros, Tinos, Patmos, Kea, Ithaca, Lipsi, Paxos, Karapathos, Meganisi, Naxos, Spetses, Poros, Hydra, and Southern Corfu.
The total budget for these interventions is covered by the Sectoral Development Program of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and is being implemented within the framework of the National Development Program 2021-2025.
The projects have been prioritized and initiated following fruitful cooperation between the Ministries of Environment & Energy and Shipping & Island Policy.
Deputy Minister for Shipping & Island Policy, Stefanos Gikas, emphasizes the excellent collaboration with the responsible Minister, Theodoros Skylakakis, and states:
“The excellent government cooperation under the guidance of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is bearing fruit. After a thorough examination of the water supply needs and necessary projects in island municipalities by the competent General Secretaries of the two Ministries, Petros Varelidis (Ministry of Environment & Energy) and Manolis Koutoulakis (Ministry of Shipping & Island Policy), and following a decision by the Minister of Environment & Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, a call is issued to implement a series of interventions aimed at addressing water scarcity in 16 of our islands.
The first cycle of projects includes 19 municipalities across the country, 16 of which are island municipalities. The total budget is close to €18,000,000 and is covered by the Sectoral Development Program of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Our government, in coordination with the local authorities of our islands, listens to the needs of island residents and provides solutions to their problems!
