The "GREGY" project was initiated in 2008 to establish electrical interconnection between Egypt and Attica. The project involves laying an undersea electric cable that will enable two-way energy transfer, with a total budget of 4.2 billion euros.
The cable will transport electricity generated from renewable energy sources in Egypt. The plan is to consume approximately one-third of the transferred energy in Greece, by Greek families and industries. Another one-third will be exported to neighboring countries in the European Union, while the remaining one-third will be used in Greece to produce green hydrogen. The largest portion of this hydrogen will be exported to neighboring European countries.
The representative of the Presidency, Councilor Ahmed Fahmy, informed the President about the progress made in the "GREGY Project" for the electrical interconnection with Europe. The project has been successfully included in the initial list of projects of common interest in the European Union.
This development paves the way for the next phase of project implementation, including the preparation of final technical and environmental studies, as well as the determination of the best route for the connecting submarine cables.
During the meeting, President El-Sisi was presented with the group's plans for renewable energy production in Egypt. Efforts to strengthen joint work between Egypt and the group to implement a 9.5 gigawatt wind and solar power generation project were also discussed.
This project is expected to significantly support the Egyptian economy and contribute to the transition to clean energy in Egypt and Europe. President El-Sisi instructed for the acceleration of joint cooperation efforts between Egypt and the group, to ensure that the proposed projects are completed as soon as possible.
He also stressed the need to streamline processes and eliminate any obstacles that may arise during the implementation of the project. President El-Sisi confirmed Egypt's intention to play a leading role in the international transition to clean energy, which will benefit the country both economically and environmentally.
Finally, the President praised the persistent cooperation between Egypt and Greece in all fields, which demonstrates the strong relations the two countries share.
