The ambitious project of the construction of a new railway line of ERGOSE that will "bring together" Thessaloniki and Toxotes was presented by the company's executives in the Region of North Macedonia - Thrace with the participation of local bodies.

The tender of the project amounts to €1.68 billion and with its completion will give the required development impetus to Thessaloniki, but also to the entire Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, aiming at the substantial upgrade of the national railway network and the transformation of the country into logistics hub.

Northern Greece is program's interest, with projects that will connect the so-called critical infrastructures - ports, airports, freight stations and industrial areas - with the railway network. The technical studies include the description of infrastructure and superstructure projects, as well as and the additional projects that will be required for their effective implementation.

New railway line under construction

The construction of the new Thessaloniki - Toxotes Railway Line is part of the Eastern Egnatia Railway and will connect Thessaloniki with the port of Kavala and Xanthi and further north with Alexandroupoli and Ormenio. At the same time, it will serve the implementation of the connection of the ports of Northern Greece with the ports of Bulgaria, in the region of the Black Sea (Burgas - Varna - Rousse), in the framework of the transnational project Greece-Bulgaria "Sea2Sea".

With the construction of the project, 206 km of new railway line, with signaling and electrification, are put into operation, with which the completion of the railway corridor connecting Thessaloniki to Kavala is achieved. At the same time, it will connect the under-development port of Nea Karvali, crossing the eastern part of the Prefecture of Kavala and will end up in the wider Toxoton area of Xanthi, where it will be connected to the rest of the O.S.E. network. The new line is estimated to reduce the Thessaloniki-Alexandroupoli route by at least 3 hours.

After the meetings, the President and CEO of ERGOSE, Mr. Christos Vinis, said "Kavala, as well as the whole of Northern Greece, are at the center of ERGOSE's planning for a series of new generation railway projects, which will connect the so-called critical infrastructure with the central railway network. Each of these projects, and all together in synergy, introduce the country into a new era, with modern passenger and freight transport and a development perspective. Our main concern at ERGOSE is to give Northern Greece a modern, reliable and safe railway network, not only to boost local development, but to turn the region and the whole country into an international logistics hub".
