The Government Committee on Housing Policy, chaired by Minister of State Akis Skertsos, outlined measures to tackle Greece’s housing challenges in 2026.

The 2026 housing program in Greece includes the auction of 10 public properties to private developers through social exchange, the launch of a project to construct approximately 1,350 affordable homes on three inactive military sites, and the introduction of two new renovation programs for older residences.

At the second meeting of the Committee—established last June to coordinate all related initiatives—an update on the measures implemented so far was presented: 43 state interventions for housing purchases or rentals, with a total budget exceeding €6.7 billion, benefiting more than 1.5 million eligible individuals. The Committee also outlined the next steps, with a strong focus on expanding the supply of affordable housing.

Key initiatives planned for 2026 include:

  • Auctioning the first 10 public properties allocated to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Investments (YKOSO), to be developed through social exchange.

  • Constructing approximately 1,350 affordable homes on three inactive military sites, funded by the Social Climate Fund.

  • Launching two new renovation programs for older residences:

    • Subsidies covering 80–90% of costs (up to €300/sqm) for homes up to 120 sqm, built before 1990, supporting minor energy upgrades and essential renovations (plumbing, electrical works, flooring, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.).

    • Renovation grants for older homes and municipal buildings to be allocated to public employees, municipalities, and communities with up to 1,500 residents.

These measures aim to increase the availability of affordable housing, modernize existing stock, and support citizens and communities across Greece.
