METLEN Energy & Metals has entered into two long-term strategic agreements with Rio Tinto, securing a steady supply of bauxite and the off-take of alumina.

As previously announced, METLEN is committed to a large-scale expansion of its alumina production capacity through a landmark investment at the historic "Aluminium of Greece" plant in Agios Nikolaos, Boeotia. This investment will significantly increase alumina production, from 865,000 tons to 1.265 million tons annually.

To support this expansion, Rio Tinto and METLEN have signed two significant, large-scale agreements:

  • Bauxite Supply Agreement: Rio Tinto will supply approximately 14.9 million metric tons of bauxite from the CBG mine in Guinea over an 11-year period (2027-2037). These quantities will complement METLEN's domestic production from its local mines.

  • Alumina Offtake Agreement: METLEN will supply Rio Tinto with 3.9 million metric tons of alumina, sourced from the new facility in Agios Nikolaos, for an 8-year period (2027-2034), with a three-year extension option (2035-2037).

Evangelos Mytilineos, President & CEO of METLEN Energy & Metals, stated: "This strategic partnership with Rio Tinto marks another milestone for METLEN, securing a stable and competitive supply chain for our expanded alumina production. With these agreements, we enhance our competitive position and solidify our presence in the global alumina market."

Jerome Pécresse, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Aluminium, remarked: "Rio Tinto is delighted to establish this long-term partnership with METLEN Energy & Metals, ensuring a secure alumina supply for our operations in the Atlantic region. This will enable us to continue producing high-quality, low-carbon aluminum for our customers, while also strengthening our position in Europe."

These agreements align with METLEN’s strategy to strengthen and expand its operations in the global alumina market. By securing a long-term bauxite supply and a stable alumina offtake agreement, METLEN is solidifying its position as a key player in the industry while ensuring sustainable growth.
