The contract for the construction of the Waste Processing Facility (WPF) in the Regional Unit (R.U.) of Larissa, which will serve the seven municipalities of the area, was signed between the Region of Thessaly and the consortium of companies Thales – Mesogeios – P & C Development.

According to the Region, the new facility has a budget of €54.6 million and will be funded through the NSRF (National Strategic Reference Framework), with an option worth €45.7 million to be exercised aimed at upgrading the unit into a Recycling Recovery Facility (RRF), fully compliant with European Directives and targets.

The new facility will have the capacity to manage approximately 90,000 tons of waste annually from the three main streams: biodegradable waste, mixed waste, and recyclables. Additionally, it will produce secondary fuel, SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel), which will be used energetically either by the cement industry or by energy recovery units. It is noted that this will be the 26th Waste Processing Facility to enter the construction phase, with a planned completion horizon set for 2029.

Manolis Grafakos, General Secretary for Waste Management Coordination, commented:
“Another waste management project, the 26th in sequence, is entering the construction phase. This is a major waste management project that effectively completes the essential infrastructure needs of Thessaly, where the facilities in Trikala are currently being constructed, and which will also serve Karditsa and Volos. I want to congratulate the elected officials at both the first and second level of local government, as well as the administrative staff of the Region of Thessaly, the former Larissa Waste Management Association, and the Municipalities, who contributed to reaching this milestone. Greece, through specific projects, is turning a new page in waste management and is gradually transforming into a circular economy.”
