According to the company’s announcement, ATHENS 1890 – Hotel & Spa features 14 rooms and suites, carefully decorated, with some offering private hot tubs. The hospitality experience is enhanced by a state-of-the-art spa, created in collaboration with the Hammam Experience team.
The listed building that houses ATHENS 1890 was originally built by silk merchant Ioannis Michalopoulos and is a characteristic example of Athenian Belle Époque architecture. Its original structure has been reconfigured while preserving its historical character. Initially, the three-story mansion with six levels combined commercial use with residential living: the ground floor once hosted a retail shop, which has now been transformed into the hotel’s reception area and restaurant, while the basement—currently home to the modern spa—was originally used for storage. The family’s main residence on the upper floors now accommodates the hotel’s rooms.
Distinctive features of the hotel include its ornate façade, the impressive wooden staircase, original ceiling frescoes, the bust of the goddess Athena from the Varvakeion Athena sculpture, and the authentic metal sign from the historic fabric store “K. Symeonidis.”
The restoration of the building was carried out with respect for its architectural identity. The interior spaces were designed with an emphasis on simplicity, refinement, and the aesthetic sensibilities of the previous century. The result is a hospitality experience that bridges the historic past with the present.
Mr. Makis Pantazatos, CEO of Aria Hotels, stated:
"ATHENS 1890 – Hotel & Spa is a highly valuable addition to our portfolio. With the utmost respect for the building’s character and in line with our philosophy, we have created a space that blends authenticity with contemporary design, offering a truly timeless and unforgettable experience."
