According to the Region, the project has an initial budget of €5,000,000, including VAT.
It is worth noting that the project titled "Cleaning, Sediment Removal, and Repair of Damages to the Technical Works of the Sperchios River from the Palaiovrachas Bridge to its Mouth," with an initial budget of €10,000,000, has already been completed, alongside other related works.
The new project’s scope involves the cleaning of the Sperchios Riverbed and the restoration of damages in areas along the old riverbed upstream of the settlement of Amouri—a region where the riverbed’s geometric characteristics are significantly constricted. Similar works will also be undertaken on the tributary streams.
The primary objectives of the project are:
- To carry out flood protection works in locations impacted by the severe weather events “DANIEL” and “ELIAS.”
- To repair and maintain existing flood defense structures, including embankments, flow deflectors, gabions (stone-filled wire mesh cages), and slope protection measures.
- To restore a uniform gradient and consistent flow in the Sperchios River and its tributaries to prevent stagnant water accumulation and localized sediment deposition.
Funding for the project has been secured through its inclusion in the “Special Program for Natural Disaster Infrastructure of Local Authorities 2021–2025”, under the Priority Axis of “Risk Prevention and Management.”
The project is financed by the National Development Program.
