The relevant invitation was issued by decision of the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikos Papathanasis, in cooperation with the Deputy Minister of Transport, Konstantinos Kyranakis.
Within the framework of this invitation, the development of the Western Thessaloniki suburban railway is planned, utilizing the existing infrastructure and constructing all necessary works—including new platforms, shelters, pedestrian bridges, electromechanical installations, parking areas, and access works—as well as the installation of modern signaling and electrification systems.
The new network will include seven railway stations: Sindos, Anchialos, Diavata, Kordelio, Eptanisos, Menemeni, and the New Thessaloniki Railway Station. It will be developed in two branches to the west (towards Sindos and towards Anchialos–Diavata) and a single branch to the east, reaching the New Thessaloniki Railway Station.
The project’s beneficiary is the company Hellenic Railways S.A. (ΣΙΔΗΡΟΔΡΟΜΟΙ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ Μ.Α.Ε.), aiming to develop and upgrade the regional intercity and suburban railway network, ensuring a safe, coherent, and interoperable high-quality transport system for Thessaloniki and the wider region.
