The strategic importance of the Metro extension in the Municipality of Acharnes, which will significantly improve the daily lives of residents, was highlighted at an event organized by the Municipality of Acharnes. The event focused on the planning and future development of the extension of Metro Line 2 in the area.

The extension of Metro Line 2 to Ilion involves a 4-kilometer stretch with three new stations: Palatiani, Ilion, and Agios Nikolaos. The project also includes the expansion and modernization of the Eleonas depot, as well as the construction of an underground parking facility.

Palatiani Station is situated at the intersection of Thivon and Andrea Papandreou streets, featuring two entrances on either side of Thivon Road.

Ilion Station is located at the intersection of Thivon and Eleon streets, with two entrances on either side of Thivon Road. It will provide a passenger transfer connection to the future extension of Line 4 to Petroupoli.

Agios Nikolaos Station is located beneath the street of the same name, within a landscaped green space between Paramythias, Olynthos, Zitsis, and Agios Nikolaos streets.

Given the future operation of the extension and the current needs of the network, additional depot space is required to service the trains. The expansion of the Eleonas Depot will take place on a nearby 20-acre site at the corner of Agias Annis and Pierias streets.

“The plan to extend Metro Line 2 to the Municipality of Acharnes is a historic milestone for the region and a project of significant importance for Attica,” said Vasilis Economou, Deputy Minister of Transport. He emphasized that the extension would not only enhance the daily lives of residents but also bolster the local economy by creating new development opportunities.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Nikos Tachiao, noted that at this stage, no specific timetable could be provided. Hellenic Metro S.A. has been tasked with managing the design and conducting the feasibility and sustainability study, which is necessary for the project to be included in a forthcoming financial plan.
