Mr. Kouretas stated: “We are starting with the extension from Anthoupoli towards Ilion, including three new stations at Palatiani, Ilion, and Agios Nikolaos, alongside the modernization of the depot in Elaionas.” He emphasized that after completing the Ilion extension, the immediate priority will be the expansion towards Glyfada and Elliniko, where a new city within the city is being developed, with studies already underway.
Simultaneously, plans are being developed to extend Metro Line 4 in both directions. One branch will start from Goudi, passing through Kifisias Avenue, reaching Lykovrysi and Melissia, while the other will begin at Galatsi and extend almost to the Athens-Lamia National Road. Studies have also commenced for connecting the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center to the metro network.
Regarding the timeline for these projects, Mr. Koureta noted that some will require between five and ten years, while others may take longer.
“Metro projects are complex and challenging; they involve multiple stages of planning before reaching the contracting phase,” explained the CEO of Elliniko Metro. He added that thorough studies, effective supervision, and prompt problem-solving are essential.
Finally, he highlighted the urgent need to develop both the intercity rail network in the provinces and fixed-rail transit systems in major urban centers.
