The government is planning two major interventions in Metamorfosi and Skaramagas to help ease the traffic congestion in Attica, while also revisiting the Standard Proposals previously submitted by major infrastructure groups, which had not been adequately evaluated.

Yesterday, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Dimas, announced the Ministry’s plan to upgrade the Metamorfosi Interchange, where long queues regularly form on Attiki Odos due to high traffic volumes. The proposed interventions will prevent the merging of two major incoming traffic streams (Airport–Lamia and Elefsina–Lamia), allowing for independent flow and significantly reducing delays, particularly during peak hours.

The proposed modifications are expected to more than double traffic capacity and reduce delays by at least 50%. The required technical studies will be prepared by the concessionaire (GEK TERNA), while the project itself will be publicly funded.

Skaramagas Triple Interchange Project

Another major infrastructure initiative involves connecting the Western Peripheral Avenue of Egaleo with the Athens–Corinth National Road, completing the Skaramagas semi-interchange, upgrading the Schistos Interchange, constructing a new grade-separated interchange at the shipyards, and redeveloping the area’s road network and drainage system.

This €70 million project, already approved by the Cabinet in January, will be funded through the Public Investment Program. The Region has completed the necessary studies, and the tender is expected to be launched in October. If the tender proceeds in 2025 as planned, and the 36-month construction timeline is upheld, completion is expected by 2030.

The project's goal is to ease traffic congestion and improve access to the Thriasio Plain, a rapidly developing hub for logistics and industry. Once completed, the works are expected to significantly improve traffic flow from Athens to Aspropyrgos, the Olympia Odos, Schistos, and the Port of Piraeus.

Future Project Considerations

The Ministry is also seriously reconsidering Standard Proposals previously submitted by major infrastructure groups, which had not been thoroughly evaluated. These include:

  • Extending the Western Peripheral Ymittos Motorway to Rafina
  • Extending Attiki Odos to the Kalyvia interchange
  • Constructing a new urban tunnel in Ilioupoli, connecting Kareas with Vouliagmenis Avenue

Also under consideration is a new road axis, “Elefsina – Oinofyta,” which is expected to facilitate mobility and stimulate economic activity in the wider region.
