With a delay of over a year, the first of the 14 refurbished trainsets for Line 1 of the Athens Metro (Ilektrikos) will finally enter static testing in December 2025, according to an update from Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis.

The next stage involves operational testing of the refurbished trainsets on the tracks without passengers, scheduled to begin in early 2026 and expected to last approximately two months. Following this phase, one newly refurbished trainset will be delivered to the Athens Metro each month, with all 14 units expected to be in full operation on Line 1 by mid-2027.

It is worth recalling that, in December 2022, a contract was signed between STASY (Urban Rail Transport S.A.) and the contractor Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) for the complete refurbishment of 14 trainsets operating on Line 1 of the Athens Metro (formerly the “Ilektrikos”). These trains originally entered service between 1983 and 1985, and upon completion of the works, they will be fully operational for an additional 25 years.

The project scope includes the replacement of the outdated and energy-intensive DC traction motors with modern AC motors, as well as the upgrade of the traction system, rotating generator, air compressors, and pneumatic system. Enhancements also involve the modernization of the air conditioning system, improvements for accessibility for passengers with disabilities, and a full interior and exterior refurbishment to significantly improve both function and aesthetics.

According to the original timeline, the first refurbished trainset was to be delivered in September 2024, followed by four more in January 2025, five additional units in June 2025, and the final four in October of the same year.
